Fast& Furious: Supercharged
Ride along with the all-star cast from the hit movies on an exhilarating high-speed chase that catapults you into the high-stakes underworld of fast cars and international crime cartels.
To bring the iconic world of the Fast & Furious to the Universal Studios tram tour in an organic way that brings the audience along for the ride.
To achieve this we had to introduce the guests to Dom and make them part of his crew. By bringing all of the characters from the films that the guests already have an emotional connection to, and introducing them and their back story throughout the tour we setup the hook of the attraction where a seemingly flesh and blood Vin Diesel as Dom enlists your help and takes you on a spectacular ride.
To meet the story challenge, we had to create a fast-moving environment that fully immerses the guests, and create the illusion that Vin Diesel, The Rock, and the rest of the crew are there in flesh and blood with the guests.
To do this Not Afraid! founder Paul Cuoco, working as an employee of Universal Creative, oversaw and mentored the show systems project team on the design, production, and implementation of all theatrical shows systems. First challenge was to create an enormous high-resolution holographic projection effect for the pre-show setup, that places Dom and the gang in a physical environment. This suspends the audiences disbelief and provides critical story points that pull you into the experience.
For the second act, we built on success of Paul’s innovative stereoscopic projection design for King Kong 360:3D, to create a fully immersive motion simulator that feels like you’re achieving speeds of up to 120 MPH. This time surpassing Kong as the largest 3-D projection environment on the planet with a bigger, brighter, and higher resolution experience that achieves nearly 80 megapixels on-screen per eye.
Moving the environment from the jungles of Skull Island to the urban jungle of Los Angeles brought additional challenges however. While the organic shapes of Kong helped to mask the inherent distortion required for the screens to envelop the 150 passenger tram, that screen shape proved unforgiving for the rigid lines of skyscrapers, freeways, and hot rods of the Fast & Furious. To combat this Paul and his collaborators at Universal Creative and Electrosonic refined the screen shape and contours to compensate for geometric distortion while still keeping the guests immersed.
