We've finally hit our picture lock milestone on "The Specimen". That means I'm done editing the film and ready to finish it off with sound, music, color correction, and titles.

I’m sorry, I’m a little behind again on the blog. It’s been awhile since I put a Specimen update on this website or posted an Inspiration, but when you can only devote yourself part-time to a project like this, and have a demanding day job these things happen.

For those of you who’ve subscribed to the Specimen newsletter, it’s website or follow it on Facebook or Twitter should already know we’ve finally hit our “Picture Lock” milestone. That means I’m done editing the film and ready to finish it off with sound, music, color correction, and titles. In fact I’ve already met with our composer Peter Tinari to start laying down the first of the music tracks. And from what I’ve heard so far, I’m very excited. If you do read the Specimen’s website you’ll also notice I just cut and past a lot of that from the latest Specimen blog post. I admit it. I’ve been very busy.

There will be a few more announcements coming, as we continue to put finishing touches on the film, including revealing a new trailer, and announcing the the on-line premiere. In the mean-time I’d like to extend a big thank you to my cast and crew for all your patience, help, and support throughout the whole process. If you peruse Notafraid.com and want more frequent updates on the film, please like it on Facebook or follow the film on twitter and you’ll always be up to date.

After weeks of script revisions, rehearsals, and planning we finally shot the film this past weekend.

I mentioned a few weeks ago our new film The Specimen was in pre-production. After weeks of script revisions, rehearsals, and planning we finally shot the film this past weekend. You can check out a quick blog post about the shoot as well as some production stills over at specimen.notafraid.com. In this blog I’ll talk more about the tech (as most readers have discovered me from my 7D articles and Z-finder review) than the film-making itself, and keep those posts on the dedicated Specimen site.

It was a longer shoot than anticipated but we got all the shots in the can, and used just about every piece of gear in my arsenal. The entire film was shot on the 7D with the 17-55mm f2.8 IS lens and the plastic fantastic 50mm 1.8, and D|Focus follow focus I picked up from Express35.com with some rails. One workhorse that was used a lot more than I anticipated was my igus based camera slider.

I did rent the Marshall LCD50 5″ Monitor to assist with focus, but I have to say their choice to use AA batteries is unfortunate. We were constantly changing batteries in that thing, and it’s peaking function for focus assist was really inaccurate.

All in all the shoot went well, and I’ve been laughing my ass off at the dailies. It’s going to be fun to edit. You can keep up with more production updates on the film by subscribing to its own web feed, liking it on Facebook, or following it on Twitter.

Based on personal experience, The Specimen is the hilariously embarrassing tale of a man, a public restroom, and his intimate moment with a specimen cup.

Many of my friends have been hearing me talk about this for some time. While I advocate not waiting, I’m also not foolish enough to go into production without a great script. That said, I’m finally going into production on my new short comedy, The Specimen. Based on personal experience, The Specimen is the hilariously embarrassing tale of a man, a public restroom, and his intimate moment with a specimen cup.

Currently in pre-production, the film stars Brian Pope and will be shot by Geoff Knight on my Canon 7D. I’ve recently launched a Facebook Page, Twitter Account, and website to help promote the film. Many of you may be wondering why I would create all this before we’ve even started shooting. You’d be right to wonder, it’s not how things are typically done, however I wanted to do something different with this film and start building our audience sooner rather than later. To keep you all engaged I plan to post updates during every phase of the project including on the set photos, behind the scenes videos, blog posts and more. While I will post some duplication of this information here the bulk of it will be on Facebook, Twitter, or the website so be sure to like, follow, and subscribe to catch up on all the latest.

Thanks as always for your support.

Paul
